I signed up Host Gator to host this site in February of 2008, after hearing good things about them from a wide array of people. The directory has over 10,000 records and because of it’s size and number of users. has had problems with a couple of hosts. One just canceled my service without even notifying me. See my Host from Hell post.

When I signed up I noticed that they had an affiliate program. I thought of joining but I wondered if I heard so many good things because people were affiliates. I decided to wait until I new more about the service they provide. Well, after almost 10 months I can say that I am happy with their service.  Over this time I have had a couple of hiccups but they were quite good to work with.  They helped me work things out and it turned out that the problems were with my customized version of  the PHPLD software.  The newer versions can be resource hogs if the cache is not working optimally.   They have quite a bit of PHPLD directory clients and work with them to correct problems.  Their support staff are very good. The support staff at PHPLD have worked with them in the past and have had good results.

They have been offering hosting since 2002 and claim to be hosting over 1,300,000 domains.  They offer a wide range of packages.  I have worked with over 20 hosting companies over the years.  I now realize that cheapest is not always the best.  I have heard some pretty lame excuses for down time.  If your site is important to you then I recommend Host Gator.

We have been working on our list of free directories from all angles.  The list is in better shape than it has been in years.  I owe much of the credit to the unknown user that went through all the way to the PR0 sites and reported all the problems. We go through the free directories quite often but we rarely make it past the PR2s.

We also:

• updated PageRank on all directories (Google has been doing some changes to individual sites)
• got rid of all the dead directories (on the entire list of 11,000)
• add a bunch of new high PR free directories
• recorded some of the higher PR free directories that are approving submissions.

The robots.txt file allows you to specify what parts of your website taht spiders can access.  You can also specify which spiders are allowed.  Here is a concise, well written article with great ideas and example robots.txt code.

We have just completed a major addition to our list of press release directories.   The list now has about 130 listings of press release directories and press release distribution sites. I have also added a new United States press release category.   

It appears that press release directories have a very high proportion of high PR sites.  There are quite a few PR5 to PR8 sites.  I will have to try to figure out why? Comments are appreciated.
