• Cost*: Free, Paid or Reciprocal (a free directory provides “dofollow” listings without requiring  anything in return).

• Comments: Include 3-10 words if there is something about the directory that sets it apart.

I have just made some updates to our list of free directories that accept deep links. These are general directories that accept internal links and sub-domains.

A big thanks goes out to our directory submission service crew. This list was compiled from the directories that we submit to as part of our deep link directory submission service.

I am currently going through all the directories on the list to ensure that it is current and useful.

Dmoz.org has been down for at least 14 hours.  Last night , when doing a routine check for valid directories in our list I noticed that dmoz was down. It has been down all morning.

It is likely a  denial of service attack or some other hacker type of attack.  The site  certainly is not popular with everybody.

Update: June 24th 12:00 AM EST dmoz.org is back up.

Although they have offered deep link submission for years Best-Web-Directories.com has just created a new custom process for deep link submissions. The new form allow clients to enter 1 or 2 internal pages. They also have the option of entering homepage submissions. It is always good to mix both homepage and deep link submissions to keep your links natural looking.

If you want to submit to the directories yourself, the site has a new list of over one hundred general directories that offer free deep links listings.

At the request of a user on DP forum, we just created a brand new list of free general directories that accept deep links. With few exceptions, these same directories also accept sub-domains.

The list is fresh and should be useful. A big thanks goes out to our directory submissions crew, as I used their master list to select the directories that accept deep links. Since we regularly remove directories that do not approve our submissions the approval rate from these guys should be pretty good. The SEO quality of the directories will also be good.

Our directory list is quickly approaching 10,000 listings but I have probably added thousands more over the last couple of years. I have notice a huge amount of directories disappearing. I have seen the "parked site" page so many times that I can’t wait until they show a different picture.

Too many directories are disappearing. Here are some observations of why?

• There is massive competition. In the beginning there was a couple of hundred directories. Now there is well over 10,000 and too many of them are general directories. The chances of a new directory becoming relevant are slim. Directories are too easy to set up. There are some great low-cost tools available. Anyone can do it, even if they don’t have the perseverance and the funds for the long haul.
• Free directories are expensive to run (time is money), mostly because they receive tons of spam from automated submitters. Many users of automated submission software don’t care if their site is appropriate for a directory. They just add any directory that they can spider. They Many directories become paid to solve the problem but this is not a great solution as they are too new to be a viable paid directory (remember all the competition).
• Huge networks of directories. Why create two directories when you can create two hundred. In my opinion, these directories are all but useless, especially if they have identical content and are stored on the same IP. The chances of an individual directory from the network getting well promoted is slim. The fact that the owner hasn’t spent any real time or money on the sites makes them easy to abandon if they don’t work out. Google tends to crack down on these sites and I have seen many networks disappear over the last 3 years. The worst case is this group of over 250 directories hosted on the same IP. I’ll discuss these in detail in a future post.

I guess what I am saying is that running a directory is not easy. It may have been 2 years ago but certainly not now. Don’t start one to make quick, easy money because it won’t happen. You need the time and perseverance.

I have been really busy over the last 3 days. First, I did a major cleanup on the existing listings. I removed a bunch of dead or inappropriate ones. It is funny how sites can completely change over short period of time. I then moved about 100 sites from free to paid/reciprocal. I didn’t make it through the lower PR sites this time around. As always, I really appreciate a quick note if you notice something has changed.

• I was away for a week so I had a whole bunch of new submissions. We now take submissions through comments on our blog. In case you haven’t seen you add directories to the list here.

• I then went through some of our reports from our submission service. I added a bunch of directories that added our free submissions. I recommend these sites as there are too many free directories that are not actively adding new free submissions. See our list of free directories and look for comments such as “added our free submission”. I will continue to add more in the coming weeks. Thanks to our directory submission crew for their hard work.

• I then searched out more free directories from the net. I am concentrating on higher PR directories and found some good ones.
